Liz Huntley and Ashby Pate Speak at 2022 Alabama Judicial College
July 14, 2022
This week, Lightfoot senior counsel Liz Huntley and partner Ashby Pate presented keynote speeches to more than 220 Alabama judges at the 2022 Alabama Judicial College.
This educational event, which the Alabama Judicial System held on July 11, featured lectures and panel discussions with prominent members of Alabama’s legal community on emerging legal issues impacting state courts. Huntley’s presentation, titled “Gray History,” focused on racial unity in Alabama. During her speech, she shared stories of how people of different racial backgrounds worked together in Alabama to achieve some of the civil rights movement’s biggest successes. Pate’s keynote focused on his time serving as a justice on the Supreme Court of Palau and the importance of human connection in the practice of law.
In addition to handling large corporate litigation matters at Lightfoot, Huntley is a committed child advocate and provides legal and consultation services to government and nonprofit agencies that serve children and families. She is frequently appointed by judges to represent the legal interests of children in civil cases, and she serves as CEO of The Hope Institute, a nonprofit that works with schools to develop character education curricula/programs.
Pate is frequently invited to speak to organizations across the state and country. He focuses his practice on international disputes, appellate work, and commercial and medical device litigation. He routinely takes on some of the firm’s most controversial matters, including prosecuting a high-profile case that led to the suspension of former Alabama Supreme Court chief justice Roy Moore. As an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Palau, Pate helped design the island nation’s first-ever jury trial system.
