Lightfoot Partners Tenley Armstrong and Brandon Essig Win 2019 ‘Law360 Distinguished Legal Writing Award’
May 15, 2019
Two Lightfoot, Franklin & White LLC lawyers have received a Law360 Distinguished Legal Writing Award. Partners Tenley E. Armstrong and Brandon K. Essig will be recognized at the 2019 Burton Awards at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. on May 20.
Armstrong and Essig received the award for an article they co-authored for University Business in September 2018. Titled “When law enforcement comes calling: The growing challenge of managing athletics investigations,” the article examines the multi-faceted legal risks facing college athletic departments and how regulatory issues, such as NCAA or Title IX violations, increasingly overlap with criminal law.
“This is a prestigious honor for Tenley and Brandon, and we are proud to see them recognized,” said Lightfoot managing partner Melody Eagan. “Not only are our trial lawyers skilled and experienced practitioners, but they're also outstanding thought leaders who are prepared to address difficult issues our clients face both in and out of the courtroom.”
The annual Law360 Distinguished Legal Writing Award is given to only 30 articles from entries submitted by the nation's 1,000 largest law firms. The award winners are selected by judges and law school professors from Harvard Law School, Stanford Law School and UC Berkeley Law School, among others.
The Burton Awards, which is run in association with the Library of Congress, presented by lead sponsor Law360, and co-sponsored by the American Bar Association, celebrated its twentieth anniversary this year.
Both Armstrong and Essig are members of Lightfoot’s White-Collar Criminal Defense and Corporate Investigations and NCAA Compliance and Investigations practice groups.
Armstrong’s practice focuses on white-collar criminal defense, corporate investigations and NCAA and Title IX compliance and investigations. She has represented individuals, companies, and educational institutions accused of a variety of criminal and civil violations, ranging from healthcare fraud to Title IX violations to sexual harassment.
Essig’s practice focuses on white collar criminal defense, corporate investigations and NCAA compliance and investigations. He is a seasoned trial attorney, having tried dozens of cases between his time at Lightfoot and as a former Assistant U.S. Attorney. He has also represented colleges, universities and individual coaches in NCAA and Title IX investigations.
