Why did you want to become a lawyer?
Being a trial lawyer was all I ever wanted to be. I have no memory of ever wanting to be anything else.
What is a valuable lesson you’ve learned in your profession?
The devil is in the details. If you fail to get the small stuff right, you will inevitably fail.
What suggestion do you have for someone looking to pursue a similar career?
Work hard. There is no penalty for hard work.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Listen. Listen. Listen.
If you weren’t a lawyer, what would you be?
Not sure.
What was your very first job?
An orderly cleaning operating rooms in a hospital in the Houston medical center (at 15 years old, by the way).
What is one thing you’re exceptionally good at?
Not golf.
What is something that’s better in theory than in practice?
Turning the other cheek.
If you could compete in an Olympic sport, what would it be?
The list of Olympic sports for which I am qualified is short and sweet. Let’s go with Curling.
How do you clear your mind after a bad day?
I stop thinking about whatever it is that caused my bad day.
What is on your bucket list?
I don’t have one.
