Lightfoot Announces Second Annual $10K Diversity Scholarship Paired With Summer Clerkship

January 10, 2022

For the second straight year, Lightfoot, Franklin & White LLC is offering one law student the opportunity to further their education and gain experience at one of Alabama's top litigation firms.

The annual Lightfoot Diversity Scholarship awards $10,000 and a summer clerkship in Birmingham to a promising law student enrolled in an American law school. The firm is accepting applications for the 2022 scholarship through March 1.

"Hiring and developing talented lawyers from diverse backgrounds is a core principle at Lightfoot, because we believe that challenging each other's perspectives strengthens our teams and benefits our clients," said managing partner Melody Eagan. "We're always looking for opportunities to translate those values into action, and investing in the future of a more inclusive legal profession is just one way our firm is doing that."

Lightfoot also offers a pre-law program for minority college students and is participating in Diversity Lab’s second cohort of the Mansfield Rule for Midsize Firms, part of a national initiative to increase diversity, equity and inclusion in the legal profession.

In pairing the Lightfoot Diversity Scholarship with a summer clerkship, the firm hopes to provide the recipient with a firsthand understanding of what it’s like to work at a leading litigation boutique. The firm’s unique, hands-on program allows participants to engage with the day-to-day experience of the life of a trial lawyer, including the opportunity to work on client matters and learn from some of the most experienced trial lawyers in the country.

Applicants are asked to submit their resume, transcripts, cover letter, and answers to the following two questions:

  • Give an example of how your diverse life experiences have contributed to the person you are today and how you hope to use those experiences in your legal career.

  • Do you have a personal connection to Birmingham, Houston or the U.S. Southeast? If not, tell us why you are interested in our summer program.

More information on the Lightfoot Diversity Scholarship and application requirements can be found on the firm’s website.
