Pate Appointed to the Supreme Court of Palau

Jan 15, 2013

Prior to joining the firm in 2010, Lightfoot associate Ashby Pate served as Senior Court Counsel to the Supreme Court of Palau and, while in Palau, helped institute jury trials for the first time in the nation's history. Now, having been nominated by Palau's Judicial Nominating Commission and appointed by the President, Pate, who is 34 years old, will be one of the youngest Supreme Court Justices in the island nation's history. At Lightfoot, Ashby Pate currently maintains a general litigation practice, with a focus on NCAA compliance and investigations, media and communications, medical device, and business litigation.

Palau is an island nation located in the western Pacific Ocean. Its 250 islands form the western chain of the Caroline Islands. Politically, Palau is a presidential republic in free association with the United States, with the US providing defense, funding, and access to social services. Palau, a former U.N. Trust Territory, gained its sovereignty from the U.S. in 1994. Because of the close relationship between the U.S. and Palau, the Palau Supreme Court, which is comprised of three Associate Justices and a Chief Justice, has traditionally had one sitting American on the Court. Pate takes the bench formerly occupied by Justice Alexandra Foster, an American who recently resigned and returned to the States after serving for four and a half years in Palau.
